Avon (Ohio) High School offensive lineman Michael Bergen jumped on a scholarship offer from nearby Toledo, committing to the Rockets over the likes of Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Cincinnati and Purdue. The 6-5, 270-pounder announced his pledge to the “Rocket Family” via Twitter Monday afternoon.
“I would like to thank my family, friends, Avon football coaches and teammates for helping me develop into the player that I am,” Bergen tweeted. “I am excited to take the next chapter in my development as a player and young man with the Toledo Rocket Family. Go Rockets!!!”
Toledo “out-recruited” the likes of Purdue and Cincinnati for Bergen, who is listed as a three-star prospect, according to Bill Greene from 247Sports. Bergen told Greene relationships with Toledo’s staff made the difference in the end, and he committed following an unofficial visit.
The Rockets landed a talented player in Bergen who is technically proficient and aggressive. He plays to the whistle and moves well in space, where he’s shown he can pick off — or engulf — smaller defenders. Bergen gets into his pass protection set well and plows defenders in the run game with a good first step.
Bergen can celebrate not only his college commitment today, but FrontPage Recruit of the Day honors.
Congrats, Michael!
