The first official blog post we wrote was about the history of weddings, so now we want to get into the history of a more specific aspect of weddings, and that is the history wedding gift giving.
As far as I can remember, every wedding I have ever been to has had wedding gifts wrapped up and sitting on a table. And while at the most recent wedding I attended, there was an option to have the gifts we ordered off the registry go directly to the lovely couple’s home, the idea of wedding gifts still remains the same.
This begs the question: why do we give people wedding gifts? And moreover, who started this tradition and how has it evolved over time?
The history of wedding gift giving technically started with dowries, which were just monies, goods or estates that the bride’s family paid to the groom. Then, there were wedding chests, which held the bride’s future wife goods and showed off social status. The chests then evolved into leather key baskets, which contained items that reflected the bride’s new status of “mistress.”
However, just like love has become more of the traditional reasoning behind marriage, so have wedding registries. Thanks to Macy’s, wedding registries and gift giving have been a thing since 1924, and we have all been stuck giving loving couples gifts during their wedding day for almost 100 years.
Lucky for us, however, wedding gift giving has become a whole lot easier throughout the years. What once was something you had to physically go to the store and see what gift(s) you wanted to choose from is now something you can do from the comfort of your own home. Now all you have to do is log onto Amazon, Target or wherever the bridal party is registered at.
And now, here we are in 2023 and wedding registries have become even easier to deal with. You do not even have to bring the gift to the wedding anymore and make someone from the bridal party be responsible for getting the gifts back to the loving couple’s home. Now, you can order a gift, put a personalized message and have it delivered right to their house.
Talk about convenience!
Wedding gifts are not going away anytime soon, so you might as well be thankful that we have wedding registries and it is as easy as ever to get someone a gift for their big day… especially if you are a procrastinator like me!
A FrontPage Story makes for a special wedding present for anyone, so quit waiting around and order one already!
