TikTok is one of the younger social media platforms out there, which makes it the perfect social platform to get in on the ground floor on.
And yet, because of this, there are a lot of positives of building your brand on the platform as well as some negatives. Check out our list of five pros and five counteracting cons below to keep in mind when considering building a brand on TikTok.
Pros:
- TikTok is still relatively new, so you still have a big opportunity to make a name for yourself.
- Unlike many other social media platforms, TikTok is much newer, especially in the sense of brand awareness. Each and every day, more and more brands are establishing themselves on TikTok because of the opportunity that is there. As long as you are following along with trends and making yourself stand out in some sort of way, you are a lot more likely to make your mark on TikTok.
- It is a great platform for creative minds
- TikTok is a place where you can really get creative. Whether you want to dance, do skits or whatever else it may be, this video-only platform really allows the creativity to flow. And thus, if your brand is creative (or if you have a strong creative team), TikTok can really help your business shine.
- You can easily hop on trends because there are always lots of them
- Even if you are not that creative, as long as you are not camera shy you still have a shot to establish your brand on TikTok. Just follow along with what is popular on TikTok and throw your own unique flare into the trend.
- You can make your content unique and different from all the other social platforms.
- Since TikTok is video only and there are certain restrictions on the videos you can post, you might feel at times that you are stuck inside a creative box. However, because it is so different you can establish your brand in its own unique way compared to all other social platforms.
- There’s no harm in at least getting your name out there on this platform.
- At the end of the day, there is no harm in trying. Even if you only get a few impressions with each video, at least you are trying and have more than zero.
Cons:
- The young audience likes to see particular content, so you have to get creative to sell your brand.
- Selling your brand is not always all that easy. TikTok is a lot more young people than any other demographic, and the last thing they want to see on there is something that is selling a brand (unless it is fun and unique and just what they are looking for). That’s why you have to make sure you do not have every video on the platform sell your product directly, which might feel counterproductive to some.
- You are restricted to just posting videos, so that can be limiting to some people.
- Again, while you can tailor your content to be unique on TikTok, some companies just do not have the time or resources to add this to the fray. If that’s the case, then TikTok might not be for you.
- You can get lost in the shuffle if you do not hop on a trend early enough.
- If you don’t have your brand established or even if you do not hop on a trend by the day it gains popularity, you are already behind. That’s why you always have to pay attention to hot trends and topics on all social media platforms at all times.
- Your creative team has to spend extra time making content just for this platform.
- Yes, you can post TikTok videos to other social media platforms, but it is not necessarily reciprocal. Because of the dimensions, you might have to remake videos you already have, or at least cut them to fit on TikTok.
- You have to spend extra time that you might or might not have to keep up to date on trends and making sure there is content on TikTok.
- Again, one of the big hinderances when it comes to posting on social media is time. And while you could argue you don’t know unless you try, it is also something that might fail. It might end up being a waste of time, or you could become the next big thing on TikTok.
So, what’s our takeaway from this? Get in before it’s too late. There is still a huge opportunity for businesses and brands to build themselves on TikTok; it’s just a matter of figuring out how. If you have even just a little bit of extra time or resources, we would recommend at least giving it a shot.
